talk

A walk as a talk for a group: the deck shape, its checks, a talk made from a walk, the run log and the recap.

A presenter can give a walk to a group. The talk is a list of slides. Each slide shows a part of the walk, one beat at a time, and it can have one question for the room. This module is the engine of a talk: the shape of a deck, the checks of that shape, the questions, a talk made from a walk, the store calls, the public deck that the room sees, the run log, and the recap after the talk. It imports no web code, so Leela can use the same shape and checks.

The imports are light: the standard library, the store, the journey, the demos, the model calls, the prompts and the settings.

What a talk is

A talk is a document on the learning shelf, of kind talk. It points at its walk in src and copies what it shows, so a change to the talk never changes the walk. minutes is the slot of the presenter. phones is the choice “Room phones”. live is the id of the run that is open now, or None.

These names give the shape. A slide has one of SLIDE_KINDS, and a question has one of ASK_KINDS.

Slides and beats

Each press of D shows one beat more. passage, body, figure and demo show a part of the slide. ask opens the question. body is a short list of points that the tutor writes for a slide that has no passage. lit:<text> lights a text in the passage, and lit:#<id> lights a part of the figure or the demo. Leela adds lines:a-b and out for its code slides.

A beat that shows a part needs that part on the slide. This table gives the part for each beat.

A figure is an image id, never a path or a URL: asset:<path in the vault assets>. An id with another scheme, a .. part, a leading /, a backslash, a second : or a control character is refused.

The body of a slide is a list of at most BODY_MOST points. Each point is a short text.

A list of short points is a good body. A text, or too many points, is not.

assert _body_ok([]) and _body_ok(['Scores become weights.'])
assert not any(map(_body_ok, ('Scores.', ['a'] * (BODY_MOST + 1), ['x' * (POINT_MOST + 1)], [1])))

A plain path and a path out of the assets folder are not image ids. A good id is.

assert _image_ok('asset:attention/images/fig2.png')
assert not any(_image_ok(f) for f in ('/Users/k/fig.png', 'asset:../vault.db', 'asset:/etc/x.png', 'ws:a.png', 'asset:a:b.png', 'asset:a\\b.png', 'asset:a\nb.png', None))

_ask_problems checks the question of one slide. A choice needs 2 to 6 options and the index of one of them. An order needs the indexes of all its options, each one time. A run question (“What does this print?”) has 2 to 6 options or none, and no answer before the run.

_beat_problems checks the beats of one slide against what the slide shows.

check_talk gives the problems of a talk, slide by slide in slide order. One slide can give more than one problem. A good talk gives []. It never raises, so a host can show the problems of a talk from a file.

source

check_talk

def check_talk(
    t:dict, schemes:tuple=('asset',)
)->list:

The problems of talk t; [] when the talk is good. It never raises.

TALK_CASES holds a good talk and one changed copy of it for each problem, with the problems that each must give. Leela runs the same cases on its own copy of the checks.

A talk that is not a dict, or a slide with odd values, gives problems and does not raise.

assert check_talk(None) == ['the talk is not a dict'] and check_talk(dict(schema=1)) == ['the slides are not a list']
assert check_talk(dict(schema=1, slides=[dict(id=['x'], kind='idea', beats='fly', ask='poll', show=None)])) == \
    ["['x']: unknown ask kind 'poll'", "['x']: unknown beat 'fly'"]

Questions for the room

A demo gate with fixed options can be a room question with no model call. ask_from_gate and public_ask are thin wrappers over rupaka.poll.of_gate and rupaka.poll.public, so the rules come from rupaka. The options are a list, or {"from": path} in the state of the spec. The answer is {"is": value}, or a path in the state. A path that is not in the state (it needs derive) gives None, and so do fewer than 2 or more than 6 options. The prompt and the options are written as the drawn gate shows them, so the room reads the same text as the demo on the screen: 2.0 shows as 2, a minus is the sign −, a number has at most 4 digits after the point (or the digits that a {path:2} field gives), and None shows as empty.

ask_from_gate gives a choice from gate gate of spec, or None.

source

ask_from_gate

def ask_from_gate(
    spec:dict, gate:str
)->dict | None:

A choice question from the gate gate of spec, with the index of the right option; None when the gate can not be a room question.

public_ask keeps only what the room can see: the kind, the question, the options, and the most characters of a words answer.

source

public_ask

def public_ask(
    ask:dict | None
)->dict | None:

The part of ask that the room sees: no answer and no source.

A short check becomes a choice of 4 options through one model call, with the prompt talk.choice. The answer stays in the talk. When the call fails, or the reply is bad, the question is a words question.

_choice gives the reply as a choice when it has a question, 4 different options and the index of one of them, else None.

When there is no choice question, the slide asks for a short answer in words. words_q writes it from the name of the idea, and never changes the case of the name. A name that reads as a question (it ends with ?, or it starts with Why, How, What, When or Which and has more words) is the question. Any other name goes in quotes after “what is”, so a name such as “CAN bus” reads well. An empty name gives no question (None).

source

words_ask

def words_ask(

source

words_q

def words_q(

)->str | None:

The words question on the idea name: the name itself when it reads as a question, else what the idea is; None for an empty name.

A name with maths that is a question keeps its maths and its case:

test_eq(words_q(r'Why scale by $1/\sqrt{d_k}$'), r'Say in one or two sentences: Why scale by $1/\sqrt{d_k}$?')

A name that ends with a question mark stays as it is. A plain noun phrase goes in quotes, with its case. A question word alone is a plain name, and an empty name gives no question:

test_eq(words_q('How does attention work?'), 'Say in one or two sentences: How does attention work?')
test_eq(words_q('Bayes?'), 'Say in one or two sentences: Bayes?')
test_eq(words_q('CAN bus'), 'Say in one or two sentences: what is "CAN bus"?')
test_eq(words_q('WHO growth charts'), 'Say in one or two sentences: what is "WHO growth charts"?')
test_eq(words_q('When'), 'Say in one or two sentences: what is "When"?')
test_eq(words_q('whenever'), 'Say in one or two sentences: what is "whenever"?')
test_eq(words_q(''), None); test_eq(words_ask('  '), None)

ask_from_check makes the call with the model task talk. ask_for_concept does the same with the statement of the idea as the passage.

Minutes

A slide with a question takes the minutes of its walk step plus talks.ask_min. The talk takes the sum of its slides.

source

talk_minutes

def talk_minutes(

A talk from a walk

Each walk step that is not skipped gives one idea slide. A demo or an order check takes its question from the first gate of the demo that can be a room question. A step with no demo, or with no such gate, uses its passage and a short check. A code check gives a words question, because a talk never runs code.

_idea_ask gives the demo slug (or None) and the question of one step.

_idea makes the slide of one step. Its beats show the passage, then the figure, then the demo, each when the slide has it.

What the slides say

A walk from a paper or a link gives each slide a passage. A walk from a topic does not: its steps have no passage, and the tutor note of a step comes only when a learner opens the step. So the tutor writes the content of each slide when the talk is made. A slide with no passage gets 2 to 4 points for the room. Each slide with no speaker note gets one: what to say, one question to ask the room, and one common confusion to watch for. A slide with a passage keeps it, and gets only the notes.

The prompt talk.slide asks for both, with one model call for each slide. You can change it on the Settings page.

_body gives the reply as points and notes, or None when it is bad. slide_notes writes the notes as Markdown.

source

slide_notes

def slide_notes(
    b
)->str:

The speaker notes from the reply b: what to say, a question for the room, and a confusion to watch for.

needs_fill is True for an idea or a primer slide that has no passage and no points, or no speaker note.

source

needs_fill

def needs_fill(
    s:dict
)->bool:

True when idea or primer slide s has no passage and no points, or no speaker note.

fill_slide grounds the slide on the passages that name its idea, in the same way as a lesson, and makes one call with the model task talk. The passages go in cites. A slide with no passage and no figure takes the first image of a vault passage, with the checks of figure_path (the vault image route uses them too). fill_slides fills the slides of a talk, at most 4 calls at a time. When the slide has a words question that the talk made from the name of the idea (words_q), the question that the model writes for the room takes its place. A question that you wrote stays. A slide that needs no call (it has a passage and a note) still gets the words of words_q in a question that the talk made.

talk_from_walk makes the slides, fills them (fill=False does not), then adds a questions slide and a recap slide, and saves the talk. The slot is the estimate rounded up to a multiple of 5 minutes. The id is made from the title, so it matches ^[a-z0-9-]{1,48}$.

Store calls

A talk is a document of kind talk. put_talk refuses a talk with problems, and replaces an earlier talk with the same id.

source

Learning.put_talk

def put_talk(
    t:dict

fill_talk fills the slides of a talk that was made before the tutor wrote slide content: the button “Fill the slides” in the editor calls it. A slide that changed while the tutor wrote keeps the change.

A plain journey can be a talk, too. talk_from_journey makes the walk for the talk (walk_for_talk in journey), then makes the talk from it. A second call gives the same talk, and again=True makes a new walk and a new talk, with the date in its title, so that you can tell it from the old talk. The old talk stays, with its changes. walk_talk gives the newest talk that a walk was made into.

What the room sees

The room sees a public deck. It is made from a list of allowed fields, never by removing fields, so a new field in a talk does not reach the room. It has no notes, no answers, no source of a question, no demo and no path. A figure comes by the sha256 of its bytes.

Only png, jpeg, gif and webp files can be figures. image_type finds the type from the first bytes of the file, not from its name.

source

image_type

def image_type(
    b:bytes
)->str | None:

The image type of the bytes b, or None when they are not a png, jpeg, gif or webp image.

assert image_type(b'RIFF\x00\x00\x00\x00WEBPVP8 ') == 'image/webp' and image_type(b'<svg/>') is None and image_type(None) is None

The host gives a resolver that turns an image id into a file. asset_resolver gives the file only when it is inside the assets folder of the vault, exists, and has an image suffix.

source

asset_resolver

def asset_resolver(
    lr:abhyasa.store.Learning

_figure reads one figure through the resolver. A figure that the resolver does not find, that is too large, or that is not an image gives None. A resolver that raises gives None too.

A slide shows its passage when it has the beat passage, or when it has no beats. Its points show in the same way, with the beat body.

public_deck gives the title, the public slides and the images by hash. Each slide has exactly the fields id, kind, title, section, passage, body, figure and ask. A slide shows its body (its points) on the same terms as its passage.

public_deck

def public_deck(

The run log

Each time the presenter gives the talk, a run log keeps what happened: the place, the time on each slide, the rounds of each question, the hands, the questions from the room that the presenter kept, and the primers that were opened beside a slide. It keeps counts only. It keeps no device token, no address and no answer of one person.

new_run starts a run on the first idea slide. key is a random 64-bit value. The channel name of the two windows has it, so an old window never drives a new run.

source

new_run

def new_run(
    t:dict, now:float=None
)->dict:

log_go moves the place. It gives the time since the last move to the last slide that was shown. A new slide gets a new entry. The presenter can go back, so one slide can have more than one entry. end_run closes the last entry and ends the run.

_ask_html draws one question: the options with the right one marked, the share right of each round, the hands, and the words answers that the presenter showed.

recap_html gives the file: the title and the date, then each shown slide with its title, passage, figure, question and result, and the question of each primer beside it, then the questions from the room that the presenter kept, with the notes. Tests

These tests use the small paper in tests/walk_data.py, the walk of tests/talk_data.py and a fake model.

A talk from the walk: one slide for each idea, then the questions and the recap.

lr = temp_learning(); jid = talk_walk(lr); ask = Fake(TALK_RULES)
t = talk_from_walk(lr, ask, jid)
s1, s2, s3 = t.slides[:3]
assert [s['id'] for s in t.slides] == ['s1', 's2', 's3', 's4', 's5']
assert [s['kind'] for s in t.slides] == ['idea', 'idea', 'idea', 'questions', 'recap']

The first slide has the title, the section, the step and the concept of its idea. It shows the passage, and its question is a choice from the short check.

assert (s1['title'], s1['section'], s1['step'], s1['concept']) == ('Sequential computation', '1 Introduction', 0, 'sequential-computation')
assert s1['show']['passage'].startswith('This inherently sequential nature') and s1['show']['figure'] is None and s1['beats'] == ['passage']
assert s1['ask'] == dict(kind='choice', **CHOICE, src=dict(check='short'))

The second slide shows the figure as an image id, and its notes are the note of the step. The third slide shows the demo, and its question comes from the gate hot.

assert s2['show']['figure'] == 'asset:attention/images/fig2.png' and s2['beats'] == ['passage', 'figure'] and s2['notes'] == 'Softmax makes weights from scores.'
assert s3['show']['demo'] == 'softmax-temperature' and s3['beats'] == ['passage', 'demo']

                         options=['It rises', 'It falls', 'It stays the same'], answer=1, src=dict(demo='softmax-temperature', gate='hot'))

The first slide shows a passage, so it keeps it and gets no points. It had no note, so the tutor writes its speaker notes. The second slide had a passage and a note, so it needs no call.

assert 'body' not in s1['show'] and s1['beats'] == ['passage'] and s1['notes'] == slide_notes(_body(SLIDE))

A slide that has a passage and a note needs no model call. Its old words question still gets the words of words_q, and a question that you wrote stays:

assert fill_slide(lr2, none, mine) is mine and none.calls == []

A demo step with no demo falls back to its idea: no demo on the slide, and a choice from a short check.

A topic step has no passage. So each idea slide of the journey talk gets 2 to 4 points as its body, with the body beat first, and speaker notes: what to say, a question for the room and a confusion to watch for.

for s in jt.slides[:3]:
    assert s['show']['body'] == SLIDE['points'] and s['beats'][0] == 'body' and s['notes'] == slide_notes(_body(SLIDE)), s

_body keeps at most 4 points, and cuts what to say to SAY_MOST characters and the question and the confusion to ASK_MOST. Fewer than 2 points, an empty part or a reply that is not a dict gives None.

assert _body(dict(SLIDE, points=SLIDE['points'] * 2)).points == (SLIDE['points'] * 2)[:4]

A bad reply leaves the slide as it was: the title only, and no notes. The talk still passes its checks.

With sources, the prompt has the passages that name the idea, and the slide keeps them in cites for the line “From your sources”. A passage that does not name the idea is not used.

Each passage goes in the prompt as data, between <source> markers, and marker text in a passage is cut. So a passage with a line that looks like an instruction, or a false closing marker, stays inside its marker. The name and the statement of the idea are quoted.

class Trick:

The prompt uses the number format of the demo: 2.0 shows as 2, a minus is −, and a field can give the digits.

The recap file has no script and no notes. It has the figures inline, the right answers and the shares, and the text from the room is escaped.

The file shows the hands, both rounds, and only the questions that the presenter kept.

log_question(r, 'A question that the presenter did not keep', at=450.)
page = recap_html(t, r, asset_resolver(lr))

A bad right answer (below 0) gives no hands line, so no letter comes from the end of the list.

A primer that was open beside a shown slide adds its question and its result under that slide. A primer with no question adds nothing.
